You can combine the twitter responsive bootstrap and the templates as suggested by geoff, i have done it on our site (but we dont use the checkout so cant comment on that part) www.vjtech.co.uk if your interested. Its not perfect (but them im not really a "web" developer) so there are a few sizing issues i've not resolved but its acceptable and certainly doable even by a novice like me.

- Direction = Horiz
- ItemSyle-cssClass = "span" (from bootstrap)

AlternatingItemSyle-cssClass = "span" (from bootstrap)
Then its just playing with css to get the sizes and placements correct.
