The [tag:link] will be using the DNN url functions to generated the url. I Assume the url re-writer overwrites the DNN functions for url writing so everything is OK.
I guess, like you says, the XSL doesn't use a this.......off the top of my head I can't think how the data is returned to display the related products, I've had a quick look, but it needs to be traced properly and then the function to generate that "link" data altered so the open url write jumps in.
