I do see your point THenrich, that ofc ppl can "just" close the popups, but none the less, most ppl (if not all) prefer no pop-ups.
While the two solutions are equally free to provide, then why settle for the lesser solution?

When we look at the very basic rules of user-friendliness, it is like so, that we shd never force anything on the user, that is unnecessary or out of context.

So if I click a link that claims to be for downloading a file, anything not directly related to the download procedure or handling of the downloaded file, is obsolete and shdnt be there, unless I as the user, deliberately asked for it.

There're plenty of ways for sharing (even large) files on the internet today, simply by using free services like, Dropbox, Skydrive, GoogleDrive or similar.

Its all about working for the user and against spam, instead of doing it the other way around. :-)

Cheers
Jake
