Hi there
If your buyers are registered users then you can create a page secured to registered users and add the orders module to it. It's one of the modules that is installed along with the store. It shows orders and also has facilities for letting them reorder. It's useful if you are selling downloads as it proved a path for buyers to follow to find their downloads if they have lost the order email.
PayPal will inform the store immediately upon payment. It does it invisibly through IPN and also when then buyer clicks to return to the store. It sounds like something is not working on your site.
The security message from PayPal might be indicating a mix of SSL and non-SSL content, or it is warning about returning to a non-SSL page, but that should not be a problem. It doesn't happen for me. Hard to say what's wrong.
I suggest going through the PayPal website payments guide that you can download here (near the top of the list) - it has tips I've collected over time.
