Be careful of anything that could corrupt the templates. One possible issue is if the editor has switched into rich text mode. That is highly likely to damage a template. So juts make sure the editor is always just a text box.
Note that you can type a new name for any template, hit save, and it will save as a copy. You can use this to save backups.
Note also that it is best to just not use the default list and details templates. Just save them with a new name and then set the product list module to use the new ones. This lets you keep the originals unedited.
