I know this is an old thread now, but ive come back to the menu on our site and i think i have finally understood your reply enough to get the basics working.
However i cant quite figure out the hiding of the submenu when displaying the final category items.

but im not sure how i do the "At that point" part? could you provide an excerpt from the standard productlist.template with the modification in? as ive tried to add the below to the top of my template but nothing happens and it doesnt seem right to me anyway as presumably this would hide the submenu all the time?

its the "at that time" part of your reply im stuck on, how do i tell the template to hide the submenu "at that time"
