The related items section is very basic and doesn't have any dynamic functionality. It is generated by the relatedproducts.xsl template in the Back Office.
If you know how to write suitable xml/xsl, you might be able to get it to do what you want.
Put the store into debug mode in the BO settings to get an example of the XML output that is referenced by the XSL.
